Amazing writers still do exist!

Anna Lee Huber's - The Anatomist's Wife is an astoundingingly well-written introductory novel.
  • Great character development.
  • All major/minor characters very well described ... not just caricatures. I actually took them all to heart/great dislike.
  • Tightly woven plot with no discernible plot holes -- even though it was obvious from the beginning who the villain was. Unlike Agatha Christie who provided lots of red herrings and no valid clues, Ms. Huber provided lots of clues to solve the mystery -- keeping us guessing to the last regarding the true motivation.
My only concern was the gothic novel overtones -- somewhat reminiscent of The Castle of Otranto. Not one of my favourite genre's especially with it's incipient damsel in distress heroines. As Jane Austen and the Bronte's have shown, by 1830 a strong woman (such as Lady Darby) had alternatives to an abusive marriage/relationship. Especially as Lady Darby came from a staunch, loving family who would have provided the resources necessary to escape the abuse. Needless to say, the dichotomy of the two Lady Darby's was baffling and unenjoyable; however as the mystery aspect of the book was enjoyable I stayed the course and decided that if we are to be provided with the stronger Lady Darby in future books then this is a series I would definitely be coming back to.

Lee Child - Jack Reacher series

As I'm new to the Lee Child - Jack Reacher series, I read the entire series within the space of a month. Like most other readers, I have to agree to disliking the descriptiveness of the sex scenes in The Affair - a major shift away from every other Jack Reacher story.

My only hope is that The Affair was used to introduce the idea of a now older Reacher who may be ready to settle down -- a bit (i.e. find out he has a child with Devereaux and take up residence in Carter Crossing with its’ nearby military base to provide ongoing investigations). As much as I enjoy Reacher's tough Everyman persona, it would be very nice to have his character show some personal growth - otherwise he is on the verge of becoming a caricature of this same Everyman. As in everything else in life, no one remains stagnant and 15 odd years of being out of the Army and roaming around begins to get psychologically unsettling. What hidden trauma is taking a relatively stable character twice as long to overcome?

Lee Child is now faced with the same challenge as Robert Ludlum in his Bourne series. How do you make an older Jason Bourne/Jack Reacher relevant given the age and physical limitations of the character (please Mr. Child DO NOT introduce science fiction in pursuing that broadly dropped hint of Reacher being part of some advance military biological experiment to produce a Super Soldier), global political changes, technological advances, personnel changes, etc. Let’s hope/pray Child is able to overcome this awkward real-life plot twist easier than Eric van Lustbader .

While I agree that the most recent books are not as enjoyable as the earlier books (after all there are only about 7 universal plots before repetition sets in), overall I am still enjoying the series immensely and will give the series a few more stories before making any final judgments.

Time to Man-Up Prince Harry

Prince Harry is right. He didn’t ask to be birthed into one of the wealthiest, most privileged families on the planet. He’s his own man and he should be able to make his own decisions; act in any manner he sees fit and not be accountable to the public. In fact, we should feel sorry for him because we’re forcing him to act outside his own inherent nature.

Or are we?

The problem here is choice. In 1660 when King Charles II and his hedonistic court squandered his inheritance on wine, women and song, the British Monarchy looked to its taxpayers to fund their privileged lifestyle. In return, the taxpayers expected the Monarchy to shape up or ship out. To be a safe beacon in a world full of turmoil. To have a strong moral compass. To be dedicated. All qualities epitomized by HM Queen Elizabeth II. A bonafide inspiration to the thousands upon thousands of volunteers and taxpayers who graciously gave of their time, energy, and money to make the wedding of her 2nd in line to the throne, her 60th Jubilee and London 2012 Olympics a monumental success. Success at a time when the world economies were and are struggling to survive. Success at a time when Briton’s are struggling to find work. Such a huge success that they could easily take it to the bank in selling the Great Britain brand worldwide. Imagine that – more jobs for Britons because the rest of the world believe them to be dedicated, hard-working and committed to getting it right.

As a member of the British Monarchy, Prince Harry had a choice. He could have chosen to opt out, taken his inheritance and let it be known he was disappearing from public life. Instead, Prince Harry’s choice was to remain in public life. With all it's accompanying perks and privileges. So we gave him a chance. We forgave him all his past infractions, bad judgments, bigotry, drug use, embarrassments, indiscretions, etc. We put it down to youthful mistakes.

Harry’s choice this past weekend was to demonstrate that all the money and privilege in the world obviously can’t buy intelligence. He chose to put enjoying the perks and pleasures of being Royal ahead of all else. He chose to insult his grandmother’s lifetime of dedication and hard work, insult The Commonwealth’s taxpayers' and volunteers' lifetime of dedication and hard work, insult his hosts/hotel who comped his lavish shenanigans, and insulted his host nation by implying their women lack character. In short, he squandered his nation’s most recent success stories and international glory -- all in the most thoughtless, selfish, senseless, spectacular way.

Take away Harry's access to inherited wealth and privilege and you have a 28 year old man who wouldn't be able to support himself. He'd be that son you despair of – always blaming everyone else for his own shortcomings and mooching and sleeping on your couch because he quickly found out that charm alone is not enough to maintain a successful, independent life.

It’s irrelevant how Harry chooses to spend his downtime, after all everyone kicks back on their vacation -- but we do it in such a way that doesn’t endanger our job, our employer, or destroy the company we're working for. We do it -- otherwise we'd be fired! No matter what the job, you make sacrifices if you want to keep that job. You show up on time the next morning no matter how sick your kid was the night before or how late you may have partied into the night. When the economy tanks you take pay cuts, work longer hours, tighten your belt, spend less time with your own family. You happily do those tasks you despise because you know it’s the sacrifice you have to make to earn job security, earn job promotion, earn more money, earn more perks and privileges – earn a better lifestyle. Last I checked, we just gave the British Monarchy a huge pay raise (i.e. an increase in taxpayer funding).

It’s once again time for Prince Harry to make a choice. Does he man up and take full responsibility for his own actions? Does he face the music and stop hiding? Does he pay his own way or does he opt out? After a week of the same old obfuscation and damage control, I'd suggest the time has come for Harry to opt out. A dissolute Prince Andrew is explanation enough. Let Harry marry Chelsy Davy and her "filthy" rich father with dubious connections to Robert Mugabe. Let Prince Harry lead the only life he's shown himself capable of -- that of a trust fund disappointment.

The British Monarchy is and has been verging on the ridiculous a la The Monaco Royals -- in which case they should be promptly abolished with the passing of The Queen. Their only saving grace right now is Kate Middleton – a heavy load to bear for someone who, thank god, wasn't born "Royal".

Gather Round Chucksters!

As you know, once again Chuck is on the NBC cancellation bubble. This is no hype to get us back out there on the Renewal battlefield. This is a reflection of the decline in viewer numbers over the past 3 weeks – a crucial time for renewal decisions.

Chuck is a brilliant show with a loyal fanbase of 6+ million fans who devotedly plan their week around Monday nights 8pm to watch this show LIVE. These numbers do not include the many millions who watch the show in other countries, online, downloads, etc. Despite it’s vastly reduced budgets and episode order debacle (along with the resulting various plot glitches), the Chuck universe has continued to unfold systematically and with believability. This is a true testament of the talent the writers, the producers, the cast and the crew bring to this show.

Let’s be honest here – this unfortunate set of circumstances is the result of one thing and one thing only – the fuck-ups known as the NBC brass! In any other circumstances I would say let them sink and hope they burn in hell! The fans and the show runners have done their part! It’s time for NBC to man up and get behind this show! UNFORTUNATELY this is NBCSUCKS! and with the Conan/Leno showdown uppermost in mind, I have major trust issues. It’s apparent the decision makers are not firing on all cylinders and are just as likely to cancel Chuck and renew something like Heroes, Mercy, Trauma and/or Parenthood. Shows, unlike Chuck, which do not receive the fan, critics and industry support.

So yes, we need to devise, spearhead and participate in even more Save Our Show campaigns. It’s a pain! It’s time consuming when we could be re-watching our favourite episode of Chuck. It’s demoralizing after all our hard work this past year! It’s where we never thought or wanted to be again!!

But WE ARE CHUCKITES! We have proven our strength more than once and we are feared! Feared by NBC! Feared by the sponsors! Feared by the show-runners! Feared by the critics! Feared by other show fanbases! NO OTHER fanbase has revolutionized the concept of show/sponsor support like we have (thank you Wendy Farrington!). NO OTHER fanbase has incited a media meltdown of attention like we have (thank you Charah shippers!). NO OTHER fanbase has maintained a loyal following after a nine month hiatus like we have (thank you ChuckMeMondays!).

So let's get back out there Chucksters! Let's kick some serious butt! Let's show the world we’re still a force to be reckoned with! Do what you have to do to SAVE OUR SHOW!!

Why I love, love, love Charah shippers!!

· They are as passionate about Chuck as I am.

· They know a good match up when they see one.

· They did something the majority of fans combined had not done on such a large scale since Wendy Farrington’s $5 Subway Footlong and Finale Campaign last April: they incited a Chuckopalypse and brought some much appreciated attention to Chuck from all the major TV sources.

· Let’s face it. The Chuck cast and crew are so darn normal the tabloids, blogs, etc. are rarely interested in them. If a minority base of their fans in a moment of crazies weakness can incite some negative attention, burn up the internet, blogospheres, etc. then I want to join Team Charah Crazies. (Sorry Team Jeffster Crazies).

· Actors and stars who are not staple tabloid fodder will be lining up to come on Chuck because who knows what the crazy Chuck fanbase will do next. Just ask Brandon Routh and Kristin Kreuk if they could get this level of exposure anywhere else!

· They ensured Chuck goes down in the annals of TV history by creating THE most talked about mid-season cliff-hanger, EVER.
